Toyota Truck Fitment: Reading the Year Splits That Matter

Toyota generations are long. The 2nd Gen Tacoma ran eleven model years. The 2nd Gen Tundra ran fifteen. Over that kind of span, Toyota refreshed the front ends — and the refresh is where parts stop interchanging.

Knowing your generation is the start. Knowing the split inside it is what gets you the right part.

The generations, first

The 2014 Tundra split — the big one

This causes more wrong orders than anything else on the platform.

The 2nd Gen Tundra ran 2007 through 2021, but Toyota gave it a significant front-end refresh for 2014 that changed both the headlight and the fog light housings. Parts cut for a 2012 will not fit a 2015, even though both trucks are 2nd Gen Tundras.

That's why Tundra lighting is listed as 2007–2013 and 2014–2018 rather than covering the full generation. If a listing gives you a year range narrower than the generation, that's not the seller being unhelpful — it's the actual fitment.

There's a further split at 2018 for some parts, where the DRL arrangement changed again.

The 2012 Tacoma split

Same pattern, smaller. The 2nd Gen Tacoma got a front refresh for 2012, so headlight fitment breaks into 2005–2011 and 2012–2015.

Housing color is a separate axis on top of that — black and chrome variants exist within the same year range, and they aren't interchangeable in appearance even though they mount the same.

The 2001 Tacoma facelift

Worth knowing if you're running a first-gen truck. The 1st Gen Tacoma ran 1995–2004, but a 2001 facelift changed the headlight housing. Parts cut for 2001–2004 won't fit a 1995–2000 front end.

This one catches people because thirty-year-old trucks get parts swapped, and the truck in front of you might not have the front end it left the factory with.

The one that isn't about years at all

On the 4th Gen Tacoma (2024+), the split isn't a model year — it's the drivetrain.

The i-FORCE MAX hybrid packages its battery pack under the rear seat, which changes the floor structure. Anything that mounts to that floor — rear seat delete kits in particular — is cut for non-hybrid trucks and won't fit a hybrid.

A listing that says "2024+ Tacoma" without mentioning hybrid status is worth a question before ordering.

How to order without guessing

1. Model year off the door jamb, not what you call the truck. A truck bought in late 2013 may be a 2014 model.
2. Match the exact year range in the listing, not the generation.
3. For lighting, check housing color against what's on the truck now.
4. For anything mounting to the floor of a 4th Gen, confirm hybrid or non-hybrid.
